  8. SmartSoft, Inc. Announces Stronghold: The Apache-SSL-US for NEXTSTEP
  9.  
  10. Cedarburg, Wisconsin - April 17, 1996 - SmartSoft, Inc. has announced
  11. that it will distribute the NEXTSTEP version of Stronghold: The
  12. Apache-SSL-US.  Stronghold is a high-performance encrypting webserver
  13. put together by Community ConneXion, Inc., of Berkeley, CA. This
  14. webserver provides commercial strength encryption that is fully
  15. compatible with Netscape Navigator Secure Socket Layer, the software
  16. encryption protocol behind the Netscape Commerce Server and the Netscape
  17. Browser.

  19. Stronghold provides a cost-effective alternative to servers providing
  20. similar capabilities from Netscape Communications Corp. at a lower
  21. cost, and with increased functionality such as: support for virtual
  22. hosts (the server can support multiple certificates per server), API
  23. Extensibility, tools for building private Certificate Authorities for
  24. installations which need to maintain high security and confidentiality
  25. with support for SSL-X.509 Client Authentication.

  27. For commercial applications, VeriSign is issuing Digital IDs for a
  28. small fee for the Apache-SSL-US web server. This provides increased
  29. assurance to customers, since the security certificate is certified by
  30. VeriSign.

  32. Source code and libraries are available for building customized
  33. versions of the server with an easy to use modular extension
  34. API. Apache itself is the most popular webserver on the Internet.
